By now, you’ve heard about the MASSACRE IN BOMBAY perpetrated by 10 Islamist gunmen who intended to kill 5,000 people.

I have no idea what Indian law is like concerning the right to bear personal arms, but it’s pretty clear that people didn’t have weapons to protect themselves…..
.
At the Oberoi hotel, the second luxury hotel to be assaulted, the gunmen called guests on hotel phones; some of those who picked up were then attacked, their doors smashed open and the guests shot. At the Taj, terrorists broke in room by room and shot occupants at point blank range. Some were shot in the back.
.
The LATEST WORD is that the death toll will rise to 300 or more, including virtually anyone who got in the way of the terrorists….anyone, that is, not specifically identified as Muslim. A Turkish couple were asked their nationality and religion by one gunman, and released unharmed when identified as Muslims.
The title of this post comes from THIS STORY, in which the photographer, the same guy who snapped the photograph shown above of the baby-faced terrorist who was the only one to survive for questioning, told his story. It’s pretty shocking stuff.
.
“I first saw the gunmen outside the station,” Mr D’Souza said. “With their rucksacks and Western clothes they looked like backpackers, not terrorists, but they were very heavily armed and clearly knew how to use their rifles.
“Towards the station entrance, there are a number of bookshops and one of the bookstore owners was trying to close his shop,” he recalled. “The gunmen opened fire and the shopkeeper fell down.”
But what angered Mr D’Souza almost as much were the masses of armed police hiding in the area who simply refused to shoot back. “There were armed policemen hiding all around the station but none of them did anything,” he said. “At one point, I ran up to them and told them to use their weapons. I said, ‘Shoot them, they’re sitting ducks!’ but they just didn’t shoot back.”
I can’t be sure, but I’d be willing to bet that if such an outrage occurred here in the south, there would be a significant proportion of the intended victims who would exact a price—thanks to the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and to the legal system of the southern states that abides by common sense and the recent Supreme Court decision, DISTRICT of COLUMBIA V. HELLER.

It does not appear that anybody in the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was armed…..they were totally dependent on the official law-enforcement folks, and those very human people failed them in their hour of greatest need. At this time of the year, it’s appropriate that we all give thanks that we live in a country where defending yourself is not only legal, it’s your right….enshrined in the Constitution. It’s comforting to live where law-abiding people with a bit of training can carry a weapon that would make something like the massacres in Bombay an unlikely scenario.
