WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT THE REVEREND JEREMIAH WRIGHT?

Well, SAM SCHULMAN explains it in logical fashion.  Of course, maybe he’s just covering for a racist nation, as perhaps the Rev would have it….but if you read carefully, I think you’ll see some sense in it.

His essential point is that Barak Obama doesn’t have much to run on except his biography.  To drive home the importance of this fact, Sam asks what people would make of his (hypothetical) friendship with a bright-red Communist rabbi of his synagogue.

Given the record of my life, the fact that my (fictional) Rabbi was a practicing, voluble Communist, defending Stalin through his campaign of mass murder to the bitter end, would hardly be germane, because I have left muddy tracks through my life.

Unlike me, and unlike, in fact, most adults, Senator Obama is a tabula rasa, who has left few footprints in the sand.

Schulman has voluminous writings laying out his principles, and how he applies them.  He has exposed himself in academia, in business, and as a journalist, and the public could assess exactly what he is because he has been very public over an extended period of time…his failures as well as his successes are known.

But it is really the absence of content and accomplishment in Obama’s life that draws so much attention to the Wright material. The Reverend Mr. Wright’s sermons are only as important as the life of Obama has been meager. And unfortunately for Obama - and for the rest of us - that life has been very meager indeed. The Book of Jeremiah Wright matters because there is no corresponding text: the Acts of Obama.
