WHAT DID YOU USE TO MAKE YOUR TOAST THIS MORNING?

AMERICAN HERITAGE Technology just came, with a wonderful article on the origin and development of the toaster.  But, did you know that there is a TOASTER MUSEUM?  Well…..it really is a “virtual” museum, since it consists pf photographs of a striking collection of toasters, inlcuding the weird and the familiar.

Strangely, this toaster museum has a COMPETITOR!

It’s the cyber TOASTER MUSEUM, the creation of the TOASTER MUSEUM FOUNDATION.  This group is actually collecting money for a traditional “bricks and mortar” museum, and you can get in on the ground floor.  Since they only have $1500.00 of the $35,000.00 they need, if you can afford to be generous, you might even get naming rights!!

I don’t want to make fun—the cyber museum covers the entire 20th century, two decades at a time, and the photos are truly fascinating.  The Foundation website has sections on TOASTER ART, including 3,000+ pieces of toast made into a mosaic of a toaster (GREAT!);  VINTAGE ADS, and so on…..  You can even subscribe to a NEWSLETTER (and no, I can’t imagine), but perhaps you have to be obsessed to do that!

One of the fascinating thing about these sites is the links—it’s incredible how many people are interested enough in toasters to buy and sell them, collect them, write about them, etc.  American Heritage even promises that there are sites devoted to testing toasters to see if they’ll set POPTARTS on fire!  I can’t vouch for this, because I DO have a job…..but if you find the site, send me a link!
