In the latest batch of photos on this grandpapa’s FAVORITE BLOGSITE appeared the world’s CUTEST GRANDCHILD.
In one picture, it appeared to this pre-senile senior that Sophia was attempting to communicate with Dr. Spock:
I was corrected promptly - first by Gail, who correctly informed me that this was NOT the Vulcan greeting - and then by one of the OTHER REGULARS at Laura’s blog.
The mistake I made, and my attempts to confirm the corrections, led me to the fascinating background of the original Star Trek’s “Vulcan greeting”. Leonard Nimoy developed this sign
based on an ancient Jewish gesture of blessing that he saw as a child when attending Orthodox services with his grandfather. Leonard was never orthodox but was sufficiently impressed that he modified the blessing into a salute (to avoid the invasion of privacy that actual touching represented for a Vulcan).
