Frankie Housley….a young flight attendant, died saving several people in the crash of a National Air Lines DC-4 on an icy runway in Philadelphia in January, 1951. She raced a rapidly spreading gasoline fire that was consuming the passenger compartment, and she escorted several passengers through the smoke and out of the plane, shoving them when she had to. In the end, she wasn’t able to save herself, or the four-month-old baby later found in her arms.
You really should read THE WHOLE STORY of Frankie’s heroism, in which she laid down her life for the passengers on her flight. But, the story doesn’t end there…..so get a hankie, and read on.
In January of 2008, Jack Neely wrote an article about Frankie in a Knoxville weekly…...and pretty quick he began to get e-mails. Some of them came from around the world - people (like me) who had never heard of the accident and Frankie’s “greater love”, but who were inspired by the story. One was from the CARNEGIE HERO FUND - to let him know that a memorial medal was established in Frankie Housley’s name and to her memory, right after she died. But, his favorite note was from Virginia Beach, VA, from a young woman who started out “I have Frankie Housley to thank for everything.”
This was the daughter of the two-year old “big sister” that Frankie had saved from the burning wreckage, just before she turned around and went back for the baby with whom she died.
You can’t always count the consequences of a heroic deed, but this case allows for some math….In all, there are, alive today, six children, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren in the Chesapeake Bay area who wouldn’t be here today if not for the young stewardess who died trying to save one more.
What a legacy! You really should READ THE WHOLE THING
