Recently, Geraldine Ferraro said that if Barack Obama were white, he wouldn’t be where he is, today…... I suppose that can be parsed a number of ways, but when I first heard the reports, it seemed to me like a reasonable way to look at things. Surely, part of the excitement about the man, beyond his considerable rhetorical skills, is the sense that he’s making history…..that there is a good chance that the Democrat party will nominate the first black man to represent a major party in a Presidential race. Isn’t that at least PART of his appeal?
So what is the big problem with this fact being mentioned?
Tom Maguire, over at Just One Minute, has written a whole column on the subject, and he makes a lot of sense to me….. I particularly love this bit:
If Barack Obama were a smooth talking white guy with an uplifting personal biography and no discernible resume, he would be John Edwards.
Tom has gathered significant evidence of the “non-issue” that mentioning Barack’s blackness has been (and ought to be), and it comes from disparate sources…..the 2004 Kerry campaign, Jesse Jackson, Andrew Sullivan, Josh Marshall, and even from the principal, Mr. Obama. Perhaps you doubt some of this….well, here is the man himself:
...seeking the endorsement of a Houston newspaper:
In a conference call, Obama told the Chronicle editorial board that “more than any other candidate, I can bridge some of the partisan as well as racial and religious divides that have developed in this country that prevent us from getting things done.“
So he mentions racial reconciliation right after partisan reconciliation. And what makes him more qualified than Hillary to heal our racial wounds?
How does this work - his being black is only mentionable, and only an advantage, when he brings it up?
You really should READ THE WHOLE THING
