PARAGLIDING IS A FABULOUS SPORT…..BUT BE CAUTIOUS!

image

PARAGLIDING is about as close to actually flying as you’re likely to get—dreams (didn’t you have them?) can come true when you are properly trained and can fly one of these by yourself.  But, as in any flying, it’s not all “Oh Wow!” and dreamy afternoons enjoying the scenery.

A young woman practicing for a competition in Australia, got sucked into a THUNDERSTORM - I’m suspicious that she was looking for one of the updrafts that precede these masses of clouds, but she got more than she bargained for.  Because she was wearing a GPS unit and other instrumentation, we know that she was lifted to an altitude of about 32,000 feet.  She was unconscious for perhaps 30 minutes, and when she got back, her face was frostbitten.  She’s extraordinarily fortunate to have survived, and spent only about an hour in the hospital having her face looked at.  I remember when I was flying, one of my instructors told me that if you walk away from it…..it was a good landing.  In her case, a GREAT landing!
