I guess that William Lobkowicz didn’t really have to “dream” about it—his grandfather probably told him about the 10 castles the family had owned in Czechoslovakia going back 700 years. One of them was in Prague…...
A Czech nationalist, Grandfather Lobkowicz had left everything when Hitler took over in the late ‘30s, but had returned after WWII restored independence to his country. Three years later, the Soviet Union took over, and the family fled again - first to England and then Boston. When the Berlin Wall fell, and freedom was restored to the eastern bloc of Soviet satellite states, William Lobkowicz headed for Prague to reclaim the family properties, as promised by the new government. Today, the family palace, just inside the main gate to Prague Castle
is open to the public,
although Prince William and his wife and children
live in a rented three-bedroom apartment. “We never wanted to live in palaces, anyway,” says the prince.
It’s not just nobility making up Americans who live in Prague…there’s a young jazz singer, a banker, an artist, and a film producer (they’re doing the new Narnia film). You can READ THE WHOLE THING in the August, 2007 issue of Smithsonian
