GOD MADE MEN, AND SAMUEL COLT MADE THEM EQUAL

Weak human beings can equal strong ones by the USE OF A GUN, distasteful as that is to some…...

One of the worst unintended consequences of the (worldwide) tendency to deny law-abiding citizens the right to carry a firearm for protection is that it puts most women at an enormous disadvantage to most men.  And men are, on average, the violent sex - meaning that women are at great risk, and their governments have removed from them virtually their only opportunity to balance the scales when a physically more powerful man attacks them.

Ten years ago, McNally found herself on the other end of a gun, when she was nearly abducted in broad daylight from a mall parking lot.

Her screams saved her then, but she vowed that next time - should there be one - she would not rely on her lungs to save her.

But, there is hope, at least in the United States of America.

For one thing, a number of States have passed CASTLE DOCTRINE laws, stating that if a citizen is attacked and in fear of life and limb, that citizen can resist with deadly force, WITHOUT the duty to retreat from the attacker.  Despite a lot of overheated rhetoric from those who oppose it, FLORIDA’S CASTLE DOCTRINE LAW has not produced shootouts over fender-benders, or any form of “wild west” activity.  Instead, violent crime rates are down, in particular the invasion of occupied homes, since the burglar never knows whether a homeowner is powerless to resist, or may be prepared to blow him away with a legal firearm.

At last report, 35 states have adopted SHALL ISSUE laws, requiring authorities to provide a permit for trained and law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed weapon when they ask for one.  And Washington DC’s 30-year old ban on private ownership of handguns was RECENTLY STRUCK DOWN by a Federal Appeals court.

Now, women are waking to the fact that their risk can be substantially reduced by Mr. Colt’s invention, as well as by the products of ongoing evolution in handgun design.

McNally, 39, represents a growing number of women who have armed themselves for personal safety.

Shooting ranges are reporting a marked increase in the number of women taking aim, signing up for concealed-weapons courses and making purchases.

On a recent Saturday, more than 200 women attended a six-hour introductory firearms workshop - an event that keeps growing each year.

Nationwide, the National Rifle Association’s “Women on Target’’ program has grown from 500 participants in 2000 to 6,000 this year.

“Women are the largest-growing demographic in the gun industry,’’ NRA spokeswoman Ashley Varner says.

And it’s about time, too.  READ ALL ABOUT IT in the Sunday Telegraph.
