ARE YOU IN A PANIC OVER THE BIRD FLU?

Good for you!!  Reacting exactly as intended…...

It’s probably wise to be concerned, but panic is hardly a helpful reaction.  How many deaths of U.S. citizens would it take to inform us that we needed to start a “War on Bird Flu”?

What about 10,000?  Not enough?  25,000?  Surely that would mean a crash program to halt the “epidemic”.....

Using new and improved statistical models, CDC scientists estimate that an average of 36,000 people (up from 20,000 in previous estimates) die from influenza-related complications each year in the United States.

That’s not “bird flu”, that’s the plain old ordinary RUN-OF-THE-MILL FLU that comes through every year…...  And the last number I saw on bird flu deaths was 100, WORLD-WIDE…...

Reminds me of the parents of one of our students, who will not allow said student to travel to Indonesia this summer on a study trip because of a fear of terrorism.  My first thought was that the flight over and back carry a far greater risk to life and limb than the chance of being blown up by a bomb, or getting kidnapped and held for ransom.  And a second thought - provided by a colleague - was that the drive to Atlanta and back would be an even GREATER risk, but the parents aren’t terribly concerned about that, either.

Our media makes its money scaring the bejabbers out of us - let’s not go along!
