Unfortunately, it was at 70 mph on Interstate 32, headed for the parents’ home in Morehead Kentucky!
The deer - definitely a male, and who knows what he was thinking about instead of speeding hunks of metal - is very much the worse for the experience, although I have no empirical data about his fate. I was far more interested in whether the car was going to be getting me where I wanted to go after our meeting.
The results of that meeting? Read on.
The buck had his feet knocked out from under him by the front bumper, his body mashed the hood and bounced, hitting at the very top of the windshield, cracking it and knocking the rear-view mirror into our laps. There were small dimples on the roof, and a lot of mud and hair on the rear deck.
The car lost power steering, as the fluid reservoir was broken. But, the left front headlight continued to operate for 45 minutes until we got where we were going. No problem with the cooling system, brakes, engine, etc. I love my Honda Civic even more after this!
We’re also giving thanks that this particular O. virginianus didn’t come through the windshield and join us in the front seat—we could easily have been killed.
The insurance company came close to totalling our (10-year old, 180,000 miles) car - but finally spent $2800.00 to fix it, and it’s pretty much back to where it was before the accident.
Moral: Don’t drive at dusk! Or maybe Fish and Game should have a longer deer season and decrease the surplus population.
Heh.
