While it is somewhat rare, a movement called Music Thanatology uses music to promote relaxation and comfort for the ill and dying. The practice allows ordinary people to use music to alleviate physiological and emotional pain for the patient and their loved ones. The experience of singing to the dying is also emotionally meaningful for the singers themselves.
We’re so very separated from death in this most fortunate country….I’m not sure that’s very good for us. Difficult as it is, we’re all headed in that direction, and helping ease someone else’s transition might very well make our own a lot easier.
