“The three-judge panel ruled unanimously on November 26 that Majid should be blinded with acid and forced to pay compensation for the injuries to Bahrami’s face, hands and body caused by the acid.

WHAT IS IT WITH CELEBRITIES and the MURDERING CHE GUEVARA?

I mean, if Che had had his way, they’d have all been lined up against the wall and shot!

Gisele Bundchen wears him on the runway, Johnny Depp wears him around his neck, and Benicio Del Toro becomes him in the new, highly acclaimed, two-part epic film from Steven Soderbergh, Che. Ernesto “Che” Guevara, the revolutionary who helped found communist Cuba, is the celebrity that celebrities adore. And be it Madonna, Rage Against the Machine, or Jay-Z, musicians really dig Che.

It’s something that baffles Cuban jazz legend Paquito D’Rivera. “Che hated artists, so how is it possible that artists still today support the image of Che Guevara?” Turns out the rebellious icon that emblazons countless T-shirts actually enforced aesthetic and political conformity. D’Rivera explains that Che and other Cuban authorities sought to ban rock and roll and jazz.

I have no idea what Indian law is like concerning the right to bear personal arms, but it’s pretty clear that people didn’t have weapons to protect themselves…..

At the Oberoi hotel, the second luxury hotel to be assaulted, the gunmen called guests on hotel phones; some of those who picked up were then attacked, their doors smashed open and the guests shot. At the Taj, terrorists broke in room by room and shot occupants at point blank range. Some were shot in the back.

STOP THE PRESSES—NEW YORK TIMES DISCOVERS TERRORISTS AT GITMO!!

Better late than never, I suppose…..

I’ll have to admit I’d be more respectful of the PAPER OF RECORD, if this discovery had occurred BEFORE the elections, but never mind…....

“It would be very difficult for a new president to come in and say, ‘I don’t believe what the C.I.A. is saying about these guys,’ ” said Daniel Marcus, a Democrat who was general counsel of the 9/11 Commission and held senior positions in the Carter and Clinton administrations….But as a new administration begins to sort through the government’s dossiers on the men, the analysis shows, officials are likely to face tough choices in deciding how many of Guantánamo’s hard cases should be sent home, how many should be charged and what to do with the rest.

This is really quite the change, don’t you think? After the last five years of reading the NYT, I was under the impression that the guys at Gitmo were simply farmers, goat-herders, and innocent bystanders swept up by the indiscriminate rampages of the American military…....what on earth has changed? Hmmmmmmmmm?

WHY ARE SO MANY AMERICANS HOSTILE TO ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION? IS IT SIMPLE XENOPHOBIA?

Well…..no.

We now have

...a report based on real numbers from real prosecutions, by the Maricopa County (Phoenix) prosecutor’s office. (PDFs of the press release and the full report.) And — shazam! — illegal aliens contribute to increased crime. They constitute an estimated 9% of the population of the county but make up 22% of those sentenced for felonies there, and more specifically:

* 16.5% of those sentenced for violent crimes
* 18.5% of those sentenced for property crimes
* 33.5% of those sentenced for the manufacture, sale or transport of drugs
* 50% of those sentenced for crimes related to “chop shops”
* 35.8% of those sentenced for kidnapping
* 20.3% of those sentenced for felony DUI.
