What you have to know first is that my grandfather, Viktor, was a full-blooded Dane - he came over through Ellis Island in the early 1900s. I’m not a Danish nationalist, but am proud of that heritage. Thus, the following makes me stand a little taller.
UPDATED: Who are WE? (see below)
The sad truth is that it is “educated” women who are having their choices more and more limited these days…...but not by men.
Despite all the hype about glass ceilings, and favoritism for males, and the rest of the nonsense being sold by the feminists in our country, the real problem is that young MEN aren’t taking education seriously, with nasty repercussions for society, and more personally, for young women who graduate from college and would like to find a nice young man with similar educational attainments.
Since he was a history/biology major, and a big civil war buff, we’ve been touring some of the interesting sites in the area. One of the major turning points of the “war of northern aggression” was the BATTLE OF CHATTANOOGA.
After spending yesterday afternoon driving along Missionary Ridge and walking over Orchard Knob and the Federal cemetery on (I think) Indian Hill, this morning we got up early and drove out across CHICKAMAUGA DAM
You have to love and appreciate Tommy Lasorda!
TWO HOURS before Santa’s official arrival Tuesday night at the John Wooden Center, Lasorda stops by the pediatric cancer ward to visit those too ill to party. He shakes hands with the extraordinary Dr. Kathleen Sakamoto, and immediately launches into a story…..
(Later that day) An announcement is made that Santa will take a break, but Lasorda ignores it. He reaches for another kid, at a time when most 79-year-olds might’ve been reaching for the Motrin.
Two hours later every kid in the room has had time with Santa, and the backup Santa remains in full costume on a bench in the back, the call to the bullpen never coming.
It’s been the performance of a lifetime — for those fortunate to witness what one happy night can mean to some kids and parents — and Santa is dripping with sweat, exhausted and hunched over while sitting half out of costume. All that’s left for Santa now are a couple of cold pieces of pizza and hot dogs.
God bless him…..“inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these…..”

“10 is the new 15” is the headline.
...child development experts say that physical and behavioral changes that would have been typical of teenagers decades ago are now common among “tweens” - kids ages 8 to 12.
I can believe the behavioral changes, but I need to see actual data for the physical - it reads a bit like an attempt by the adults to avoid responsibility for depriving their kids of their childhood.
Some of them are going on “dates” and talking on their own cell phones. They listen to sexually charged pop music, play mature-rated video games and spend time gossiping on MySpace. And more girls are wearing makeup and clothing that some consider beyond their years.
Enjoying some time off, and some time with baby Sophia.
Sex may be casual, but there ARE significant signs of love and affection…..
Among more than a half-dozen students at the University of Maine, there seemed to be two universal truths: that hand-holding is the least nauseating public display of affection and that holding hands has become more significant than other seemingly deeper expressions of love and romance.
“It is a lot more intimate to hold hands nowadays than to kiss,” said Joel Kershner, 23. Because of that, he said, reaching for someone’s hand these days has more potential for rejection than leaning in for a smooch at a party where alcohol is flowing.
Libby Tyler, 20, said it was “weird that hand-holding is more serious,” but true. “It’s something that you lead up to,” she said.
There is nothing casual about it any more, said Rachel Peters, 22. “Hand-holding is something that usually people do once they’ve confirmed they’re a couple,” she said.
