IT’S OKAY TO HATE THE LA DODGERS, BUT….....

You have to love and appreciate Tommy Lasorda!

TWO HOURS before Santa’s official arrival Tuesday night at the John Wooden Center, Lasorda stops by the pediatric cancer ward to visit those too ill to party. He shakes hands with the extraordinary Dr. Kathleen Sakamoto, and immediately launches into a story…..

(Later that day) An announcement is made that Santa will take a break, but Lasorda ignores it. He reaches for another kid, at a time when most 79-year-olds might’ve been reaching for the Motrin.

Two hours later every kid in the room has had time with Santa, and the backup Santa remains in full costume on a bench in the back, the call to the bullpen never coming.

It’s been the performance of a lifetime — for those fortunate to witness what one happy night can mean to some kids and parents — and Santa is dripping with sweat, exhausted and hunched over while sitting half out of costume. All that’s left for Santa now are a couple of cold pieces of pizza and hot dogs.

God bless him…..“inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these…..”

REGARDLESS OF YOUR POSITION ON ABORTION, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF ROE v. WADE?

This was the Supreme Court decision that took jurisdiction over abortion away from the 50 States, and substituted the judgment of seven justices - based on Harry Blackmun’s reading of history and the law.  Anyone who thinks Blackmun did a good job in this landmark decision had better read Joseph Dellapenna’s NEW BOOOK, Dispelling the Myths of Abortion History before expressing that opinion in the future.

LATEST SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE

Sex may be casual, but there ARE significant signs of love and affection…..

Among more than a half-dozen students at the University of Maine, there seemed to be two universal truths: that hand-holding is the least nauseating public display of affection and that holding hands has become more significant than other seemingly deeper expressions of love and romance.

“It is a lot more intimate to hold hands nowadays than to kiss,” said Joel Kershner, 23. Because of that, he said, reaching for someone’s hand these days has more potential for rejection than leaning in for a smooch at a party where alcohol is flowing.

Libby Tyler, 20, said it was “weird that hand-holding is more serious,” but true. “It’s something that you lead up to,” she said.

There is nothing casual about it any more, said Rachel Peters, 22. “Hand-holding is something that usually people do once they’ve confirmed they’re a couple,” she said.

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF BUILDING YOUR OWN CATHEDRAL?

Don Justo, a former monk, did…...and then he began.

image

Until recently, he did it by himself (some nephews provided a bit of manpower) and on his own dime.  No help from community, church, or anyone else except contractors with extra materials to donate, and people who heard about him and came to volunteer.

This year, Coke came calling - as part of their campaign celebrating the human spirit (and, not incidentally, selling Coca-Cola) they have put Don Justo on TV spots all over Spain.  He may even live to see it finished…..although that’s a long shot for the 80 year-old farmer.

You can read about it HERE in English, and HERE in Spanish.

SO, ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE COMING THEOCRACY IN THE U.S….....?

No, no….not the victory of the Muslim jihad and the imposition of shari’a law…..I mean the CHRISTIANIST theocracy to be established by the Religoius Right.  Apparently that’s the one we really ought to be worrying about, according to those on the left.

Well, ROSS DOUTHAT says to get over it.

REAL SEX: The Naked Truth About Chastity

THAT got your attention, no?  Mine, too.  I read a positive review of this book (I think in BOOKS and CULTURE), and knew I had to read it.

Conservative Christian churches (and conservative Christians generally) have a real problem in today’s culture, when they attempt to defend what seems so very important to us to an increasingly secular society.  And that increasingly secular society includes so many (in my more discouraged moments, I would say “most”) of our fellow-Christians.  In fact, if we’re brutally honest and even reasonably self-aware, we are constantly getting sucked in, ourselves.
