MERE CHURCHIANITY by MICHAEL SPENCER

Not long ago, we lost a major Christian voice that many people had never heard of.  Michael Spencer, THE INTERNET MONK died of cancer (I believe - you can check the site) far too soon.

I read his blog irregularly, and was blessed every single time.  He was quirky, principled, sometimes angry, and always fully committed to Jesus Christ as Lord of his life…..a good man.

His book, titled as above, is going to be published in June, but you can DOWNLOAD A SNEAK PEEK HERE.  I highly recommend that you do this, although along with being blessed by Michael Spencer’s writing, you are going to feel a lingering sadness that such a voice is no longer with us.

Of course, if you like what you read and are blessed, you can always GO TO THE ARCHIVES at The Internet Monk and have a look around.  I suspect that you may get hooked…..  The tragedy is that you will no longer have the pleasure of interacting with Michael, a unique voice who is, and will continue to be, sorely missed.

But…....we *will* meet again.

WHAT A REMARKABLE DISPLAY IN TONIGHT’S SKY…..

Check out what appeared in Manila’s night sky on Sunday, May 16:

Isn’t that cool?  I’ve never seen this before, but I suspect that it may be rather more common in MAURITANIA, or perhaps ALGERIA.

WALKING AROUND THE AIIAS CAMPUS

AIIAS stands for Adventist International Institution for Advanced Studies, the Far Eastern Division’s Seminary that also has a graduate school giving advanced degrees in Business, Public Health and Education.  It’s set on a tract of land (40 acres?) surrounded by a wall with barbed wire on top of it.  It is an oasis of order and care in the midst of the chaotic muddle that surrounds it.  I’ve not (yet?) been very systematic about touring, but will take you along on my Sabbath morning walk.  First, here’s an overall view of my house…..

Faculty housing is on two sides of the periphery of campus, and all are like this - duplexes with the garage between, and adjacent kitchens at the back of the house.  They’re all made of masonry that’s been plastered inside and out.  I’ll do another post just about the house, later on…..

When I walk out the front door and turn left, this is what I see….note the wall on your right - we’re at the back of campus, far from the busy road that runs by the entrance out front.  On the left are the houses, lining the peripheral campus drive.

VISIT TO A LOCAL MALL and SUPERMARKET - UPDATED

Sadly, I wasn’t able to get a picture of the exterior of the mall.  When we were far enough away to see anything, we couldn’t stop and I wasn’t able to grab a snap.  When we were close, all I could get was big walls.  But, it’s a totally enclosed, three-story mall with two main halls connected (only on floors one and two) by cross passages.  VERY busy and noisy….

I was there with Woodrow Whidden and his wife Peggy, and since he does the grocery shopping, I went with him.  We quickly toured the three floors, just to get the layout (I was still somewhat confused) and then we were back at the entrance to the large supermarket on the second floor.  It was fairly typical…..although a lot more piles of items on the floor than anywhere but Grocery Outlet, I think…...

GETTING TO MANILA, ALL IN ONE DAY

A few months ago, I was asked to share the teaching of a class with a good friend, Tim Standish, who works for the GEOSCIENCE RESEARCH INSTITUTE in Loma Linda.  We’re in Manila, at the ADVENTIST INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE for ADVANCED STUDIES, addressing a class of pastors, administrators, and students about the relationship between our religion and modern science.

The adventure started at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Bend, when the alarm clock went off and Gail and I popped out of bed, threw on our clothes, jumped in the car with the two carry-on bags, and drove to Redmond/Bend Airport.  I got out, we kissed good-bye, neither of us remembering the bag of sandwiches and fruit I’d packed the night before - writing a BIG NOTE to myself not to forget and leave it in the refrigerator.  My plane left at 6:15, and I remembered my breakfast bag about 1/2-way to Portland.

Ah well, I had three hours in the Portland Airport, so I had a “Tree-Hugger’s Scramble” in the grill you can see, near my gate…
