YOU BOUGHT A PRIUS?  SERIOUSLY…....?  BUT, A BEEMER GETS BETTER MILEAGE!!

Well…...let’s be honest—a “particular” BMW, in a real-world test of driving as we all do it, got over 50 mpg to the Prius’ 48.1.  On top of that, the Beemer had the air-conditioning on, and (surprise, surprise) left the Prius in the DUST unless it was on the downhills.

This is not some super-secret research vehicle, either—it’s the BMW 520D.  There ARE some disadvantages to the BMW, of course:

REMEMBER THE FALLEN

Frankie Housley….a young flight attendant, died saving several people in the crash of a National Air Lines DC-4 on an icy runway in Philadelphia in January, 1951. She raced a rapidly spreading gasoline fire that was consuming the passenger compartment, and she escorted several passengers through the smoke and out of the plane, shoving them when she had to. In the end, she wasn’t able to save herself, or the four-month-old baby later found in her arms.

You really should read THE WHOLE STORY of Frankie’s heroism, in which she laid down her life for the passengers on her flight.  But, the story doesn’t end there…..so get a hankie, and read on.

TEXAS, BE PROUD…..MONICA LIN BROWN IS A SILVER STAR RECIPIENT

A 19-year-old medic from Texas will become the first woman in Afghanistan and only the second female soldier since World War II to receive the Silver Star, the nation’s third-highest medal for valor.

Army Spc. Monica Lin Brown saved the lives of fellow soldiers after a roadside bomb tore through a convoy of Humvees in the eastern Paktia province in April 2007, the military said.

RACE IS STILL A HOT-BUTTON ISSUE IN THE U.S….AT LEAST WHEN THERE’S POLITICAL ADVANTAGE IN IT…..

Recently, Geraldine Ferraro said that if Barack Obama were white, he wouldn’t be where he is, today…...  I suppose that can be parsed a number of ways, but when I first heard the reports, it seemed to me like a reasonable way to look at things.  Surely, part of the excitement about the man, beyond his considerable rhetorical skills, is the sense that he’s making history…..that there is a good chance that the Democrat party will nominate the first black man to represent a major party in a Presidential race.  Isn’t that at least PART of his appeal?

So what is the big problem with this fact being mentioned?

THERE IS MORE THAN ONE VARIETY OF HEROISM…...

Paying a debt is one…...

Let WWII P-38 pilot Fred Hargesheimer’s story show you what that means.

image

The Japanese fighter caught the American pilot from behind, riddling his plane with machine-gun rounds. The left engine burst into flames. It was time to bail out.

He yanked on the release lever but the cockpit canopy only half-opened. He unbuckled his seat belt, rose to shake the canopy loose and was instantly sucked out.

Swinging beneath his opened parachute, he plunged toward a Pacific island jungle of thick, towering eucalyptus trees, of crocodile rivers and headhunters, into enemy territory, and into an unimagined future as a hero, “Suara Auru,“ Chief Warrior, to generations of islanders yet unborn.

HEROES DO WHAT’S NEEDED—REGARDLESS OF CIRCUMSTANCES

Sergeant Jonas Jerome Allen is a hero…..he was manning a Humvee’s turret-mounted heavy machine gun when the gunner in the next Humvee experienced a breakdown of his MK-19 Grenade launcher.

image

Since Sgt. Allen was more proficient with the grenade launcher, he maneuvered his Humvee alongside the one with the malfunctioning weapon and the two gunners traded vehicles and weapons.
