HOW COME WE’VE ALL HEARD OF PAT TILLMAN….BUT NO ONE KNOWS JASON DUNHAM?

After all, Jason Dunham WON THE MEDAL OF HONOR (posthumously, since he gave his life for his buddies)

“His was a selfless act of courage to save his fellow Marines,“ Sgt. Maj. Daniel A. Huff of the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, was quoted as saying in Marine Corps News that April.

“He knew what he was doing,“ Lance Cpl. Jason A. Sanders, 21, of McAllester, Oklahoma, who was in Dunham’s company, was quoted as saying by Marine Corps News. “He wanted to save Marines’ lives from that grenade.“

Can you name for me a SINGLE living Medal of Honor winner…...?

THE FACE OF COURAGE….STARTING YOUNG

image

In a better world, Christian Golczynski would have his Daddy as he grows to manhood, as many of us do.  Of course, in a better world we won’t have to fight to prevent evil men from murdering innocent men, women and children to accomplish their aims.  There will be no (new) Marines in heaven.

Looking at it another way, Christian’s problem is a common one these days….only most kids without a father lost him for causes far less important than Marc Golczynski was serving - the cause of liberty.  As we look at Christian, we see overwhelming grief that will at some time in the future be at least partially moderated by the knowledge that his Daddy did not abandon him - he gave his life for something important.

There are a lot of little boys just like Christian in their loss of their father, but whose abandonment was based on things like pride, or immaturity, or self-centeredness, or something else that will never help a fatherless child in his struggle to grow into a whole person.  READ ABOUT CHRISTIAN.....and reassess your option to divorce.

SOMETIMES IT SEEMS AS IF WE *WANT* TO LOSE THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN!

The drug warriors are at it again—making plans to spray defoliant on the poppy crop in southern Afghanistan!  This drives the populace into the arms of the Taliban, and is completely unnecessary.  Apparently there is a need for opium in the legitimate market, and we would be far better off to simply buy the entire crop.  Everyone wins—the world gets the opium it needs for medical purposes, the Afghani farmers make money from their #1 cash crop, and the Taliban loses the income from illegal sales of opium.

THE RETURN OF THE STEAM ENGINE…..?

Not Exactly…...but along with the AIR-POWERED CAR, this six-stroke, internal combustion/steam engine is the kind of thing that our inventors and entrepreneurs can be expected to produce for us…...

Crower calculates that the Steam-o-Lene boosts the work it gets from a gallon of gas by 40 percent over conventional engines. Diesels, which are already more efficient, might get another 5 percent. And his engine does it with hardware that already exists, so there’s no waiting for technologies to mature, as with electric cars or fuel cells.

THE COURAGE AWARD FOR MAY OF 2007….

...goes to Kellie Lim, a triple amputee at age 8, after a devastating bout with bacterial meningitis, an infection that raged out of control, becoming systemic and leading to clotting and irreparable damage to her limbs.

Her inspiration for her life of perseverance and triumph came at least partly from her Mom, who

went blind in her 20s and, except for not driving, sought to continue as normal a life as possible in raising three children. She cooked, cleaned and walked the youngsters to school.

Mom died three years ago, but before she did, Kellie made her a promise….

MY HERO FOR THIS WEEK…...

We’re spending a week with my daughter and her husband in Lincoln, Nebraska—the real attraction is Sophia, the first granddaughter, of course.  Watching my little girl care for her own babe brings a special kind of pride and admiration, and she’s gone through a lot for this baby.

But, tonight on WITTINGSHIRE.COM, I was directed to a story that took my breath away, for the quality of self-sacrificing love that it displayed.

We’d all go through a lot for our own children - give up things, put up with things, postpone things, even clean up things…..  But, what about someone else’s child?  What about a virtual stranger?
