FEELING CONCERNED ABOUT SECOND-HAND SMOKE?  GET OVER IT…..

If you’ve ever really thought about it, the idea that breathing in a bit of smoke in a restaurant, or on a bus, or at the auction, or even in a bar, could give you lung cancer is kind of ludicrous…...considering that MOST smokers who breathe in great lungfuls of the smoke directly from the business end of the cigarette don’t die of lung cancer.

That little bit of common sense has just been supported by some actual data.

SHANNEN ROSSMILLER IS THE NEWEST WINNER OF THE “COURAGE AWARD”.....

She’s a part-time paralegal and a small-town judge in Montana, but those are her day-jobs…...in the middle of the night, Shannen Rossmiller tracks down jihadists.

Like a hunter using a duck call, Shannen Rossmiller invites the online attentions of would-be terrorists by adorning her e-mail with video clips of Westerners getting their heads cut off.

“They get pumped up when they see beheadings. For them, it’s like rock videos,” Rossmiller said. “I always give the appearance that I am one of them.”

EDDIE FEIGNER, “THE KING” OF SOFTBALL, IS DEAD AT 81…..RIP

AL GORE IS BEING CRITICIZED FOR JETTING AROUND THE WORLD…..

And other environmental alarmists are hearing the same kind of thing…...if global warming really is a crisis situation, how come you’re not riding the train?  Or appearing at all these European meetings via tele-conference?  What makes it reasonable that YOU should get a pass for emitting enormous quantities of CO2 in order to get the word out that WE need to change our lifestyle in order to minimize CO2 emissions?

The answer now being given is that they are engaging in “carbon offsetting”, which means they’re planting trees on their property sufficient to absorb the amount of carbon dioxide produced by their latest jet trip.  Or that they’re paying the money so that the trees needed are planted over in Africa somewhere.  Or, if they’re feeling capitalistic, that they’ve bought up “carbon credits” from someone (or some corporation) that WAS going to emit the CO2, but now cannot.  In any case, the argument is that they are arranging things so that the lifestyle they prefer to go right on living is “carbon-neutral”.....and their environmental righteousness is preserved.

Someone has heard about this, and decided that it’s an idea whose time has come…..and it needs to be extended.

I ALMOST NEVER READ HOROSCOPES, BUT…...

We’re seeing some intriguing evidence that WHEN you are born can have profound influences on your later life…..

There is firm evidence that the time of year you are born affects not just your personality, but also your health, specifically your chances of developing serious mental illness. But don’t expect to find clues in your horoscopes. The star in question is the star we were all born under - the sun.

Being born at certain times of year gives a small but significantly increased risk of problems such as depression, schizophrenia and anorexia nervosa. The question is no longer if the seasons affect mental health, but how. Pinning this down could yield vital clues on how to intervene to prevent mental illness.
