Recently took the Ornithology class down to DAUPHIN ISLAND, ALABAMA, someplace that anyone interested in birds should see in springtime, at least one time in their lives.
We drove down on Thursday (7 hours from Collegedale), stayed 2 1/2 days and came home on Sunday. This year, like last, the island greeted us with wonderful weather - that means no rain, which is unusual here in the South - but the poor birds had a headwind trying to get from the Yucatan to the States, and our warbler count was less than in 2005. However, we did see a number of warblers, plus a Magnificent Frigatebird, and some other interesting birds. We also experienced something that was just plain jaw-dropping amazing! Fortunately, one of our students had a real nice camera with a great zoom lens, so we have photos, too…....

Unfortunately, it was at 70 mph on Interstate 32, headed for the parents’ home in Morehead Kentucky!
The deer - definitely a male, and who knows what he was thinking about instead of speeding hunks of metal - is very much the worse for the experience, although I have no empirical data about his fate. I was far more interested in whether the car was going to be getting me where I wanted to go after our meeting.
The results of that meeting? Read on.
We eat a LOT of different stuff imported from around the world. But (according to American Heritage magazine), ONE of them is far and away the most successful…...
So, take a guess—which would YOU say? 93% of all Americans eat it at least once/month (our family is part of the 7%). Think, now….no peeking until you actually guess….....
And the winner (according to YOU) is….....
I really am going to post something about our Ornithology trip the first weekend in April, but it’s now the last week of the term before Finals, and things are genuinely crazy around here. HOWEVER, looking at the new Smithsonian magazine, I saw the announcement of the hatching of the first KIWI CHICK at the National Zoo since 1975. The BROWN KIWI is a fascinating bird, and in some danger of extinction in New Zealand, so producing them in captivity is something of a priority these days. If you wait until after 6:00 p.m. EST, you might even see the new chick on the KIWI WEB CAM. There’s a flamingo cam and also one for the Micronesian Kingfisher linked on that page. Have fun.
But, sadly, there doesn’t seem to be a lobby for my particular set of vices. Unlike those who prefer alcohol…...
We’ve all read the stories about how those who drink a little bit have BETTER health than those who don’t drink, right? Have you been even SLIGHTLY suspicious of those? Well, a year or more ago, it was reported that the teetotalers they used in those “studies” included EVERYONE who wasn’t drinking at the time of the study….including people ordered to quit by their doctors for health reasons!!
Funny how it just got into the MSM (REUTERS, to be precise) isn’t it?
Or not…....
It turns out that kids exposed to a lot of sexy material on MTV and movies, and in the music they listen to, tend to get naked and “do it” earlier than kids not so exposed.
Is anybody so completely clueless that they would be surprised by this?
WHERE have you been all your life?
