REAL SEX: The Naked Truth About Chastity

THAT got your attention, no?  Mine, too.  I read a positive review of this book (I think in BOOKS and CULTURE), and knew I had to read it.

Conservative Christian churches (and conservative Christians generally) have a real problem in today’s culture, when they attempt to defend what seems so very important to us to an increasingly secular society.  And that increasingly secular society includes so many (in my more discouraged moments, I would say “most”) of our fellow-Christians.  In fact, if we’re brutally honest and even reasonably self-aware, we are constantly getting sucked in, ourselves.

BLIND CHILDREN REQUIRED TO TAKE DRIVER TRAINING…..

I suppose you could post this under “Why your child shouldn’t be in public schools”, but that file is already FULL!!

Anyhow, the CHICAGO TRIBUNE reports

Mayra Ramirez scored an A in driver’s education this year, but sitting through the 10-week class felt like a bad joke to the Curie Metropolitan High School sophomore.

Ramirez is blind. She knows she’s never going to drive. She can think of a lot of things she’d rather be studying than rules of the road, but she didn’t have a choice.

Chicago Public Schools requires all sophomores to take the class and pass a written road-rules exam—a graduation requirement that affects about 30 blind and visually impaired students in specialized programs at Curie and Payton College Preparatory High.

Read the whole thing.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER REASONS TO STOP ALREADY WITH THE “WAR ON DRUGS”?

How about THIS HEADLINE:

First Grader Punished for Bag of Dirt

It’s happening again, folks—over-zealous adults with a “no-tolerance” approach and no common sense have made horse’s hind ends of themselves, although they don’t seem to realize it.

Enough already!!

Hat Tip: the BOOKWORM, who seems to have her self-esteem wrapped up in her traffic numbers on the blog.  Do her a favor and drop on over—it’ll be a pleasure as well as a service!

ARE YOU IN A PANIC OVER THE BIRD FLU?

Good for you!!  Reacting exactly as intended…...

It’s probably wise to be concerned, but panic is hardly a helpful reaction.  How many deaths of U.S. citizens would it take to inform us that we needed to start a “War on Bird Flu”?

WOULDN’T YOU JUST LIKE TO BUY SOME TIME, NOW AND THEN…....?

Well, for over 50 years around London, you’d have bought it from Ruth Belville.  It all sounds very quaint and Victorian, but there was a snake in the grass…...

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH THE ICE IN THE ANTARCTIC?

What we’re reading, seeing, and hearing in the media is mostly similar to the following:

This week Science Magazine’s on-line SciencExpress reports that Antarctica has been losing large amounts of ice mass over the past three years, contributing to sea level rise at a rate of 0.4 ± 0.2 mm/year. This comes on the heels of a paper published by Science two weeks ago that reported that Greenland was also losing big chunks of ice and contributing to sea level rise at a rate of 0.57 mm/yr.

HOW CRAZY *IS* IT IN SOME OF OUR COLLEGES?

Stanford University gives the Allan Cox medal each year for faculty excellence in guiding student research. Cox was a professor of geophysics and dean of the school of earth sciences at Stanford. He committed suicide in 1987 while under investigation for sexually molesting the son of a former student. The molesting allegedly went on for five years, starting when the boy was 14.
